The Directory (1795-1799)

A new government made up of 5 directors was formed, known as the Directory. It was inefficient, mainly supported by the upper middle class.

Rise of Napoleon

It was during this period that Napoleon Bonaparte gradually rose to power. In this time of revolutionary wars, he was made Commander of the Army at the age of 27. He led the poorly-trained French Army across the Alps to defeat the Austrians, forcing the Austrians to make peace.  The Italian Campaign marked the rise of Napoleon.

He led the Egyptian Campaign in 1798. He returned to France in 1799 and overthrew the unpopular Directory, replacing it with the Consulate.
